From Slate, animal right and vegetarian activists PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) offer a $1,000,000 reward for the first scientist that can develop, produce and bring to market "in vitro meat". Meat made in a laboratory without any animal ... or we presume soul ... involved in its production. This raises many questions and divides vegetarian opinion ... would it be sattvic?
PETA's idea is to save the lives, and suffering of more than 40 billion chickens, fish, pigs, and cows are killed every year for food in the United States alone. The fake "chicken-meat" product must have a taste and texture indistinguishable from real chicken flesh to non-meat-eaters and meat-eaters alike.
BUT ... there is, as they say, no such thing as a free lunch ... PETA's deal is that it must be sold to the public by June 30, 2012 and every BK and a few Mayan's all know that the world is going to be destroyed by then! Eslewhere on the internet, one medical university reports that the technology already exists and just waits for financial investment ...
Is lab meat vegetarian?
